Rae Shearn worked with Martha Graham during this period, who is renowned as the "Mother of Modern Dance" and is one of the most acclaimed creative directors and choreographers. She also collaborated with Donald McKayle, the Sophisticated Ladies' dance choreographer. She performed her last performance at the First Miami New World Festival of Dance after joining the Miami Fusion Dance Company.
Rae Shearn served as a Southern District Magistrate before joining Janet Reno at the Miami Dade State Attorney's Office. During the Miami Riots, the Court Broom Sweep, and the Miami River Cops case, she also served as a prosecutor. When Janet Reno was in charge of the Specialty Division's narcotics section in the 1980s, she was one of her employees. The AFL-CIO, FLARA Labor Union Office hired Rae Shearn as an attorney in 2003. She represented the AFL-CIO and FLARA Labor Union Office during the unlawful G8 WTO arrests of union members who exercised their first amendment rights. A federal anti-terrorism fund financed the 8.5 million dollars G8 police Action Plan, and she was the only criminal defence lawyer who could take on that challenger. When hundreds of demonstrators were arrested for expressing their First Amendment rights at the Intercontinental Hotel in Miami, Florida, she was among the first to assist defend them. Despite the fact that hundreds of individuals were detained, none of them was convicted.
Having just one private defence counsel for death row inmates since the 1990s, Rae Shearn has been a major player in the reform of Florida's death penalty statutes. Since 2019, the Miami Florida Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys has been working to improve the lives of those in need of legal assistance. The Florida Association of Women Lawyers appointed Shearn to the executive board, where she was in charge of publicity.
